Victorian veils have fallen upon Salem today as the Dickens Fellowship of North Boston has coordinated a series of events to usher in the holiday season— and the Dickens 2012 Bicentennial Celebration!
The first step is a “Victorian Child’s Play” taking place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Old Town Hall. It was scheduled to begin with a piper-led Victorian and Steampunk costumed promenade from Armory Park. There will be games, a sing-along, and a performance of the “Party Scene” from the “Nutcracker” (performed by the New England Ballet Ensemble). And of course, hot chocolate, cookies and gingerbread ornaments to eat or take home.
The event is sponsored by Ye Old Pepper Company, with proceeds to benefit the North Shore Hospice and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Then at 3 p.m. “Introducing Mr. Charles Dickens” also takes place at Old Town Hall. Actor Albert Cremlin will present a dramatic story about Dickens’ life, novels and classic characters.
“Holiday Evensong” follows at 4:30 p.m. at Salem’s First Church, 316 Essex Street. This is a holiday tradition with the Boston Boys Choir. Proceeds will benefit the Church.
The conclusion will be “An Evening of Victorian Delights” at 6:30 p.m. also at First Church. It highlights Dickens’ favorite 19th century music and his original compositions. Larry Young and Suzanne Powers are the featured performers.
