A Call for Proposals has been released. The Salem Arts Festival is looking for participation from artists and performers in a diverse range of media for this event June 5 – 7, 2009. The Festival will celebrate painting, photography, sculpture, dance, music, writing, film, new media, performance, theatre, poetry, culinary, etc. The event will support local artists by providing them a free venue to interact with the community. The festival will take place downtown Salem.

The deadline for all entries is April 15, 2009. Artists and performers – in all genres – and especially those from Salem, are encouraged to apply. The festival also wants to encourage applications from artists interested in guiding children’s activities. Acceptance of proposals will be dictated by time and space requirements, as well as appropriateness to the festival’s goals. Art will be juried by a representative of the Peabody Essex Museum.

The Salem Arts Festival is being organized by Salem Main Streets, the Salem Arts Association, Salem State College, Peabody Essex Museum, Salem Film Fest, American History and Music Festival™, Gordon College and Salem Sounds.

In a Dream – “Over the last thirty years, artist Isaiah Zagar has covered forty thousand square feet of Philadelphia with grand-scale mosaics. When Zagar’s son Jeremiah picks up a camera to document his father’s career, he is confronted with the reality of the man in front of the lens. In A Dream is an unblinking look at a celebrated artist who may not always be the husband and father his family needs him to be.”

Life, Support, Music – “In August 2004, Jason Crigler, one of New York City’s most sought-after guitarists, suffered a brain hemorrhage during a concert in Manhattan. That night at the hospital, the doctors told Jason’s family—if he makes it through the night, there won’t be much left of him. Jason’s wife, Monica, pregnant at the time, froze. “Everything completely stopped. I forgot all about the pregnancy. I think I left my body. I remember thinking, ‘This cannot be true. Salem Film Festival 2009!

The festival includes 22 films from all over the world. Fifteen of the filmmakers plan to attend the festival, which promises rich filmmaker discussions and after-party experiences. 7:00 pm “The Quest for the Best” Talent Show, CinemaSalem, Debra Crosby’s Talent Quest Finale Competition will feature Scott Wahlberg of the famous Wahlberg brothers and dance crew leader E knock from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Group as judges.

Friday, February 27
5:00-7:00 pm VIP Reception at the CinemaSalem Café, hosted by the Creative Economy Association of the North Shore and the Salem Chamber of Commerce. Invited guests include Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, State Representative John Keenan, and representatives from the Massachusetts Film Office.

Friday, February 27
10:00 pm After-hours at Gulu-Gulu with film makers

Saturday, February 28
10:00 pm After-hours at The Lyceum with film makers

Sunday, March 1

Congratulations to the Emerling Family of Salem who were the 2009 Salem’s So Sweet Golden Ticket Raffle Winners.

There were approximately 5,000 Golden Tickets distributed throughout the festival and the winning ticket was selected at random from all completed tickets. The Salem’s So Sweet Gift Basket prize is valued at over $700. Participants were required to have their Golden Ticket validated at 10 participating businesses. There was no purchase necessary to win. During the festival, the Emerling family had such a good time they went to 21 different businesses instead of the required 10. The prize, a Salem So Sweet Gift Basket included donated items valued at over $700:
