June 1st through June 3rd, the 4th annual Salem Arts Festival will be in full swing. Come to this entirely FREE event hosted by Salem Main Streets. The opening reception is Friday evening. Located in Old Town Hall from 5 – 7 p.m. you can enjoy a juried art exhibit and live music and dance. On Saturday check out the juried street fair located on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall near Old Town Hall and Collaborative Abstract Expressionism located next to Gulu Gulu in Lappin Park. Old Town Hall will continue to host the art exhibit and even more live comedy, music and performances. And if that isn’t enough, there will be live music, hoopdance and bellydance performances all afternoon on the East India Fountain Stage. Then on Sunday catch even more performances on the East India Fountain Stage from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and join a human chess game in Derby Square at noon. Wrap up the weekend at the Gulu Gulu Café starting at 5 p.m. with music, poetry, film and a Wrap Party.  The 5th Annual Living Green & Renewable Energy Fair will take place in and around Old Town Hall in historic downtown Salem on Saturday, May 19 from 10 am – 3 pm. The event is organized by the Salem Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem Renewable Energy Task Force.

The Fair will bring together green industry professionals and consumers from the Greater Boston & North Shore regions to discuss products, services and information that encourage healthier, more sustainable consumption and lifestyles for businesses and families. The City of Salem Beautification Committee will host their 5th Annual Plant Sale fundraiser where fairgoers can purchase a wide assortment of home-grown perennials, a variety of annuals and a selection of hanging baskets. The plant sale will be held outside on Derby Square, directly in front of Old Town Hall. The Fair will also feature the 2nd Annual Salem Seed Exchange, an ethical electronics recycling event, a free screening of a “green” themed film at Cinema Salem, and other fun activities for the family.

The 4th annual Salem Main Streets Salem Arts Festival will be held June 1st – 3rd. The popular and ever- growing event will feature over 80 artists including local bands, painters, photographers, poets, belly dancers, to name a few.  The Festival is a family friendly event with free performances, free art making activities and a fantastic range of art on display. The festival website is www.salemartsfestival.com and is in the process of being updated.

The Festival is spread out at a variety of venues in downtown Salem, anchored at the Essex Street Walking Mall. A Juried Art Show will be held in Old Town Hall. This year live performances and demonstrations will be held outside, at the Museum Place Mall Fountain (weather permitting).  Last year Festival attendance numbers were over 4,000 people and we expect an even larger crowd this year. Rain location for the performances is upstairs Old Town Hall.

Spend your weekend downtown Salem April 20 – 22 at the Mass Poetry Festival.  The poetry festival kicks off Friday with programs for Families and Children; then moves into adult programing in the later afternoon. In the evening enjoy a headline reading with Robert Pinsky, Maggie Dietz and Major Jackson. The night closes out with an intercollegiate poetry slam at Victoria Station.

Saturday begins with workshops and more programs for children and families.  Throughout the day there will be activities for families in the Peabody Essex Museum. Across the street in the Museum Place Mall, the small press fair will run from noon to 5:00 pm. Montserrat College of Art will be silkscreening and giving away Mass Poetry festival book bags. At 1:30 pm there will be a reading of the 2012 Common Threads poets. More than 60 readings, workshops, panels and performances will sprawl throughout downtown Salem all afternoon. In the evening there will an amazing performance of song and poetry by powerful story tellers. The evening will end with a late night Poetry Slam organized by famed slam master of the Boston Poetry Slam Simone Beaubian!

The Salem Film Festival runs through Thursday, March 8. There are five or more films to choose from each evening playing at Cinema Salem. For a full list visit www.salemfilmfest.com. Then join us as we wrap up the festival at 10:30 p.m. at the Cinema Salem Cafe. At this event the Jury and Audience Award Winners will be announced.
