The smell of popcorn crunching underfoot elicits only one place where the lights are perpetually dim and the working mill about in black. But this past week something different was in the mix here in Salem: The cerebral stimulation of social commentary, injustices around the world, information in, above and below the mainstream, some with comedic undertones, all with a message that only a documentary film can provide. Package this for seven days…you have the third annual Salem (all documentary) Film Festival.

Billed as the largest documentary film festival in New England with over 34 films ranging in styles and genres, this year’s success can be attributed to the support of an entire community. Come to Salem, See the World!
Finally after much anticipation tonight is the start of the Salem Film Festival. This is a rare opportunity to see incredible documentary films that you might only see in major cities like NYC or San Francisco. Movies run the gamit of topics and themes from “Long Distance Love” to “Rock Prophecies” from stories of high school seniors to a Marine’s perspective of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. Come be a voyeur into other people’s lives or come to experience the diversity of experiences presented in the wide range of movies. Sixteen ice sculptures grace downtown Salem. Come downtown to enjoy these beautiful works of art with themes ranging from a crystal snowflake at Lappin Park to Romantic Movies at Pickering Wharf. A new attraction of this year’s festival is an ice carving at 1:00 Saturday, February 6 at Pickering Wharf. Enjoy great discounts, free chocolate samples and much more at participating businesses downtown Salem. Also, if you haven’t gotten your H1N1 flu shot yet the Salem Health Department is conducting a flu clinic at the Waterfront Hotel Saturday, February 6 from 12 – 3 p.m.

**THE WINE AND CHOCOLATE EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT**
The Salem’s So Sweet festival kick’s off tonight with a Chocolate and Wine Tasting Friday, February 5 with delicious treats ranging from chocolate cheesecake to chocolate truffles to chocolate ice cream. There will also be a nice wine selection from area wine shops and restaurants. The event will be held at Hamilton Hall, 9 Chestnut St., Salem, MA starting at 6:30 p.m.
