The Salem Maritime Festival which is the start of Heritage Days begins tonight with a concert at Derby Wharf from 7 – 9 p.m.  The festival continues with music and many great activities for all ages Saturday 10 – 5.  A flotilla of ships from ports far and near will converge at Salem’s historic waterfront to celebrate the 22nd annual Salem Maritime Festival to be held Friday, August 6th and Saturday, August 7th, 2010. This year, Salem Maritime, the National Park in Salem, offers a special salute to our fishing heritage, as well as the free family fun, live music and traditional maritime crafts that the Maritime Festival is well-known for. The event is organized and hosted by the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.  For more details click here or visit the Salem Maritime Site’s official website.

National Farmers Market week is from August 1-7th. Why not celebrate it by coming down to the Salem Farmers’ Market today, and pick up some fresh produce, bread, and desserts (to name just a few of the things we have.) or follow this link and vote for the Salem Farmers’ Market as your favorite market.  There are over 6,000 farmers markets in the United States a growing number about double what it was only 10 years ago.  Most food in the U.S. travels about 1,500 miles to get to the consumer by shopping locally at farm stands and local markets you dramatically reduce the distance food travels.

The Salem Farmers Market accepts the EBT card for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Food Program (or SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) making local food more accessible to the broader community.   Support your farmers market and support your community.
