Yesterday at the market was a beautiful day. Over 3,000 people attended  including Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and State Representative John Keenan. With the mellow music of Brad Byrd playing in the background people enjoyed cider donuts and cupcakes while they shopped for lobsters, bok choy, corn on the cob, raspberries…

Captain Dusty'sEW Hobbs Ice Cream

Volunteers are needed for Salem’s Annual Ice Scream Bowl, taking place on Salem Common Tuesday, August 10 at 6pm.  Help is needed for set up, tear down and taking tickets. Today at the market – Caffe Graziani is doing a cooking demonstration at 3:30 and Julie Dougherty, Folk/Pop/Singer Songwriter, performs from 5:00 – 7:00. This week’s rotating vendors are Historic New England Phillips House and Ara Leamar Custom Art Glass.

In case you missed the news, Coven the hot new store with fabulous baked goods in downtown Salem has joined the Salem Farmers’ Market.  Their booth is located at the entrance of Artists’ Row on Front Street.  Also, joining us this week is Flat Mentor Farm which promises to add more variety in the choice of vegetables at the market.  There will be more great music starting at 5 p.m. in Derby Square Thursday.  The market opens at 3 p.m.

while trying to endure the sweltering heat downtown Salem.  Think cool thoughts and look forward to the Salem’s Ice Scream Bowl Tuesday, August 10 on the Salem Common.  This favorite Salem tradition is part of Heritage Days and a fundraiser for Salem Main Streets.  More details to follow.

Downtown Salem has numerous places to enjoy take out ice cream – Ben & Jerry’s, Captain Dusty’s, Maria’s Sweet Somethings, Jaho, Josh’s Place, Polonus, Puleo’s Dairy, Rita’s and now Seaport Cafe.

Thursday several thousand people came to the Salem Farmers’ Market to enjoy the beautiful weather and fantastic selection of items.  It was a great place to do your shopping for the holiday weekend. 

Enjoy the weekend downtown Salem at one of over 40 eating establishments or at the many wonderful shops or museums downtown.    On the 4th of July, come to the common at 9 a.m. for a reading of the Declaration of Independance and the singing of our national anthem and America the Beautiful.  Later in the day there will be children’s activities on Derby Wharf (4 p.m.) and music by the Hillyer Orchestra (7:15 p.m.) and fireworks (9:15 p.m.).  Visit the city’s website for a full schedule www.salem.com.
