In celebration of opening its 200th store, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt is encouraging customers to make monetary donations to Boston Children’s Hospital and offering a free 8 oz. cup of froyo to the first 200 customers at each of their Boston-area stores on Thursday, Sept. 27 including the Salem store at 76 Lafayette Street. The event kicks off four weeks of fundraising at all Boston-area Orange Leaf stores for Boston Children’s Hospital of which Orange Leaf will help contribute funds collected with a goal of raising $25,000. All donations collected will be directed toward the Children’s Fund, which supports the hospital’s areas of greatest need.

Salem Main Streets is excited to announce a new initiative called “Salem First Friday” where many downtown Salem businesses will stay open until at least 8 p.m. on the First Friday of every month. Businesses will host special events and entertainment, offer discounts and promotions.

During the first First Friday, October 5, locals can enjoy Trick-or-Treating with Mayor Kimberley Driscoll starting on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall at the entrance of the Museum Place mall at 5:30 p.m. Hundreds of children are expected to dress up and trick-or-treat with the Mayor.

Many Salem attractions will be open Free to Salem Residents starting at 3 p.m. As always, the Salem Witch Museum and Peabody Essex Museum are free to Salem Residents but during this night additional attractions will be open free to residents.

There will be many downtown businesses offering special events, promotions and entertainment. Events Friday, October 5 include a wine tasting, movie night, musical entertainment and more. Here are a sample of some of the participating businesses: Boston Bead Company, Seed Stitch, Avalanche Company Store, Maria’s Sweet Somethings, Pamplemousse, Mud Puddle Toys, Treasures Over Time, Rouge Cosmetics, Glass and Etc., and Two Girls Shop. Salem Farmers’ Market

Thursday, September 20 from 3 – 7 p.m in Derby Square on Front Street. Enjoy shopping for fresh local fruits and vegetables and numerous specialty foods. There will be a cooking demonstration by 43 Church at 3:30 and music by Brad Byrd from 5 – 7 p.m. The market sponsor of the week is Salem State University.

Join Salem Park, Recreation and Community Services and the Wicked Running Club for the 2nd Annual Run at Work. The goal of RUN@WORK Day, presented by the Road Runners Club of America, is to encourage adults to get 30-minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work, during lunch, or immediately following work. Join the run Friday, September 21, 2012 at noon at the  Salem Common. Parking: On street parking available. Course: 3.1 mile fun run from Salem Common, to the Salem Willows and back. Entry Fee: FREE! Salem hosts two book events Saturday, September 15.

First, Salem Recycles is sponsoring the 7th Free Book Swap at the Senior Center at 5 Broad Street from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bring unwanted books, unused greeting cards, CDs, DVDs and videos and peruse for items you wish to take home. There is no cost and really no donation of any kind required. Just show up and bring home items new to you!

The Salem Athenaeum just a few blocks away is also hosting their Annual Book Sale on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and on Sunday, September 16 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Also, at the Salem Athenaeum starting at 10 a.m. is a discussion about how Dickens inspired Louisa May Alcott. Registration is required for this event by contacting dickensnorthofboston.com.

Later that night Pamplemousse and Cafe Polonia are hosting a Salem Oktoberfest fundraiser for the Salem YMCA. This will be held in Old Town Hall from 5 – 9 p.m. Tickets are $20.
