Come downtown to the Salem Common to welcome Santa Claus. He is expected to appear a little after 6 p.m. tonight on the roof of the Hawthorne Hotel. The Salem Fire Company is planning on assisting his decent from the roof on a ladder truck. He will then be greeted by State Representative John Keenan who will also be on hand to light the Salem Common Tree. Enjoy lovely carols, elves with candy canes for children and hot chocolate by 62 Restaurant. The event is organized by Salem Main Streets.

Those of you who wish to see Santa should proceed to the Museum Place Mall where he will hear the wishes of good boys and girls. For those who do not wish to see Santa there are many other great events going on tonight with Salem’s First Friday events where businesses stay open until at least 8 p.m. offering refreshments, promotions or entertainment. If you missed the Holiday Tree Lighting Friday night there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful tree which graces Lappin Park now through the end of December.

Don’t miss the Downtown Salem Tree Lighting in Lappin Park Friday, November 23 at 6:30 p.m. After you stagger home from Black Friday shopping stop downtown for dinner and the annual Tree Lighting. Enjoy the lovely sounds of the season by the Paul Madore Singers starting at 6:00 p.m. The tree is made possible through the generous support and donations of  John and Sally Hayes for donating the tree, Matt Kaminski and Meeting House church for tree locating and coordinating and donating funds, Mayer Tree Service putting the tree in place, Bills Auto Clinic for transporting the tree, Gary Gill for his work decorating the tree and fundraising, Delande Lighting for donating lights, David and Jackie Eng for decorations donation, Tache, Tony Lena and North Shore Fruit Basket for donations, donations made in memory of Juliette Marquis and the Department of Public Works for all their efforts in installing the tree and downtown decorations. According to the Salem News “In Salem, staffers at Tavern in the Square restaurant will donate their time to serve free Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 189 Washington St., Salem, MA.

They hope to feed twice as many people as last year, when 225 people dined on turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and “all the extras,” said Mark Morris, co-owner of Tavern in the Square.”
