Salem July 4th activities:

At 9 a.m. join Mayor Kimberley Driscoll on Salem Common for the reading of the Declaration of Independence, read by Neil Chayet. Followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Salem High School’s a cappella group, Witch Pitch.

At 4 p.m. the festivities begin at the Salem Maritime Historic Site on Derby Wharf kick off. There will also be a Kids’ Space with free face painting, games, crafts, contests and prizes.

7:15 Opening Ceremonies – Music by the Hillyer Festival Orchestra and U.S. Military Flyover

This Saturday, June 30th, come support the North Shore Pride Inaugural Parade and Festival! The North Shore Pride, Inc is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the general welfare, and acceptance of LGBT community. The parade begins at noon on Margin St. and makes its way to Salem Common where there will be speakers, performances, music and more. Over 80 non-profits, local businesses, religous groups, and community organizations will be participating in this brand new event and we hope you will join in too as we promote “unity in our community”! This weekend, June 9th, the Peabody Essex Museum unveils an exhibition showcasing both iconic and lesser known images created by Ansel Adams. At the Water’s Edge explores Ansel Adams’ appreciation for water and the many forms it takes in nature. Focusing on seascapes, beaches, bays, tide-pools, clouds and waterfalls,  viewers will have the chance to appreciate over 100 images captured by Ansel Adams, many of which come from his own personal collection. Ansel Adams spent significant time on the North Shore photographing some familar Massachusetts landmarks. He served as a consultant for Poloroid for many years. Don’t miss the band Merrimack on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the East India Fountain Stage. Their blend of classic pop music mixed with bluesy vocal style and impeccable harmonies will set the perfect tone for an afternoon in Salem.

Then go see Katie Stannard of Peabody who specializes in Expressive Arts Therapy. Her wonderful use of acrylics on both wood and canvas demonstrate her talent for incorporating emotion into her art.

Monday, May 14,  internationally renowned artist, Kenny Scharf, will transform Salem’s downtown parking garage with a new and colorful mural. The Los Angeles based artist strives to connect to popular culture through art and enhance everyday life with his original works. Kenny’s mural will contribute to Salem’s growing reputation as a center of art and culture on the North Shore. Whether it is the annual film, poetry, literary, Salem Arts Festival, painted utility boxes, or world class art at the Peabody Essex Museum, Kenny’s mural will contribute to the role of art in the Salem community.   Kenny’s mural is one more way the city is bringing art to the public, and his mural will add a new and colorful dimension to downtown. Kenny has worked all over the world and we are looking forward to seeing his final creation.  Do not miss this wonderful opportunity to watch Kenny bring new life to downtown Salem at the Museum Place Mall garage on New Liberty St. on Monday, May 14!
