Santa in Salem

On November 28, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Santa Claus made his annual visit to Salem arriving on the Hawthorne Hotel roof to the applause of hundreds of on-lookers. Santa descended from the roof via the Salem Fire Department ladder truck and was greeted by Mayor Driscoll who welcomed Santa back to Salem. Music was provided by the Gathering and a fantastic new musician Nathan Mills who accompanied the process on his saxophone down Essex Street.

Downtown Salem is filled with holiday cheer and greenery – holiday wreaths, a window decorating contest and much more. Take a look!

The crowd proceeded to Derby Square to watch the Mayor and Santa Claus light the downtown Tree as part of the Salem Beautification Committee’s Tree-mendous Event. This event was assisted and supported by Salem Main Streets. The tree was donated by Nunan’s Florist & Greenhouses. The tree was decorated by ornaments collected by the No Place For Hate Committee. The project was coordinated by Shirley Walker. Entertainment at the tree lighting was provided by the Victorian Carolers through a donation by Goldberg Properties.

Mayor Driscoll, Representative Keenan, Senator Kerry, Congressman Tierney and others were on hand as the American Planning Association (APA) designated Salem as one of 10 Great Neighborhoods in America. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planning plays in creating communities of lasting value. APA Great Places offer better choices for where and how people work and live. They are enjoyable, safe, and desirable. They are places where people want to be – not only to visit, but to live and work every day. America’s truly great neighborhoods are defined by many unique criteria, including architectural features, accessibility, functionality, and community involvement.

Through Great Places in America APA recognizes the unique and authentic attributes of essential building blocks of great communities – streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces. For more information visit www.planning.org
