Celebrate Flag Day at the Salem Farmers’ Market

Thursday, June 14 is Opening Day of the 4th Season of the Salem Farmers’ Market. This year the market has a dozen new vendors and is bigger and better than ever. The market opens in Derby Square on Front Street at 3 p.m. with the ringing of the market bell by State Representative John Keenan. There will be a cooking demonstration at 3:30 by Chef Tony Bettencourt from 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar and music by Qwill at 5. The market closes at 7 p.m. Thursday is also Flag Day and the market will be celebrating Flag Day by distributing flags (limited number available). This weekend, June 9th, the Peabody Essex Museum unveils an exhibition showcasing both iconic and lesser known images created by Ansel Adams. At the Water’s Edge explores Ansel Adams’ appreciation for water and the many forms it takes in nature. Focusing on seascapes, beaches, bays, tide-pools, clouds and waterfalls,  viewers will have the chance to appreciate over 100 images captured by Ansel Adams, many of which come from his own personal collection. Ansel Adams spent significant time on the North Shore photographing some familar Massachusetts landmarks. He served as a consultant for Poloroid for many years. Salem Arts Festival showcases solo performers to larger bands, amateur artists to professional photographers all in one weekend of free fun. For a full list of details visit www.salemartsfestival.com.

Don’t miss the band Merrimack on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the East India Fountain Stage. Their blend of classic pop music mixed with bluesy vocal style and impeccable harmonies will set the perfect tone for an afternoon in Salem.

Then go see Katie Stannard of Peabody who specializes in Expressive Arts Therapy. Her wonderful use of acrylics on both wood and canvas demonstrate her talent for incorporating emotion into her art.

The work of Nahant native, Karen Hallion, will be displayed in the juried art exhibit located at Old Town Hall during Salem’s 4th annual Arts Festival. Karen blends acrylic, pencil and photoshop techniques to produce her eye catching and original works.

You can catch Big Blue Octopus Sunday, June 3rd at 3 p.m. at the East India Fountain Stage performing their musical mix of psychedelic saxophone, improvised drumming, rich guitar chords and harmonized vocals.
