At the Salem Farmers’ Market Thursday, September 1 there will be a cooking demonstration by local chef Jennifer Normant who is currently appearing on the HELL’S KITCHEN Television show. Jennifer Normant is a chef with the Hawthorne Hotel here in Salem. She currently is on the FOX TV show which airs locally Monday and Tuesday evenings. The market is held Thursdays in Derby Square on Front Street from 3 – 7 p.m. The cooking demo will take place starting at 3:30. From 5 – 7 p.m. enjoy music by Will Faust. The market features delicious fresh fruits and vegetables from 9 local farms including one certified organic farm. In preparation for the storm, residents are advised to carry in all outside light objects and lawn furniture, clear catch basins near their property, and are encouraged to log onto the Fire Department and Health Department pages on www.salem.com to access information ranging from how to protect your home from damage to creating an emergency evacuation bag, what types of food to stock up on in case of an emergency to what you need to know if you lose power.

Stop by the Salem Famers’ Market Thursday from 3- 7 p.m. and enjoy the market’s first ever Tomato Festival. There will be children’s activities including face painting from 3 – 7 p.m. At 3:30 Chive will do a cooking demonstration featuring tomatoes. Enjoy the music by System Sound a collaboration between ScottVoid and Qwill from 5 – 7 p.m. At 4:15 there will be tomato judging. Stop by the market pick up some tomatoes and try a new recipe. Opening this weekend, July 30th, Peabody Essex Museum presents Painting The American Vision.
Stop by the PEM this weekend and check out the 45 gorgeous magnificient natural landscapes paintings. The exhibit includes works by Thomas Cole Frederick Church and Asher Brown Durand, known as artists of the Hudson River Schoo. Admission to the museum and this exhibit is free for Salem Residents.

A Celebration of Salem’s Heritage in “Ships, Sawdust, Sailors & Song” August 5-6, 2011
The 23nd annual Maritime Festival will host an exciting array of free family fun festivities, including live music, free harbor cruises, traditional craft demonstrations, story-telling, dancing, theatre and much more! The Festival is organized and hosted by Salem Maritime National Historic Site, your National Park in Salem.
The Friendship of Salem, a replica of 1797 merchant vessel will host the NPS Junior Ranger Program for children. Other visiting ships include a U.S. Coast Guard 47’ Motor Life Boat; Schooner Fame of Salem, a full-scale replica of a once famous Chebacco fishing schooner; the Vessel Finback offering the HOBBES onboard marine ecology program; Lewis H. Story, the flagship of the Essex Shipbuilding Museum; plus a fleet of kayaks, canoes, jolly boat, duck boats and radio-controlled model boats on display. Free 90-minute harbor cruises will be offered starting at 9am on Schooner Fame of Salem and Vessel Finback (see website for Ticket Drawing information). Free kayak, canoe and jolly boat rides will be offered 10am – 4pm.
