Salem hosts two book events Saturday, September 15.

First, Salem Recycles is sponsoring the 7th Free Book Swap at the Senior Center at 5 Broad Street from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bring unwanted books, unused greeting cards, CDs, DVDs and videos and peruse for items you wish to take home. There is no cost and really no donation of any kind required. Just show up and bring home items new to you!

The Salem Athenaeum just a few blocks away is also hosting their Annual Book Sale on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and on Sunday, September 16 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Also, at the Salem Athenaeum starting at 10 a.m. is a discussion about how Dickens inspired Louisa May Alcott. Registration is required for this event by contacting dickensnorthofboston.com.

Later that night Pamplemousse and Cafe Polonia are hosting a Salem Oktoberfest fundraiser for the Salem YMCA. This will be held in Old Town Hall from 5 – 9 p.m. Tickets are $20.

Celebrate Flag Day at the Salem Farmers’ Market

Thursday, June 14 is Opening Day of the 4th Season of the Salem Farmers’ Market. This year the market has a dozen new vendors and is bigger and better than ever. The market opens in Derby Square on Front Street at 3 p.m. with the ringing of the market bell by State Representative John Keenan. There will be a cooking demonstration at 3:30 by Chef Tony Bettencourt from 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar and music by Qwill at 5. The market closes at 7 p.m. Thursday is also Flag Day and the market will be celebrating Flag Day by distributing flags (limited number available). Opening day of the 4th annual Salem Arts Festival is upon us! Friday, June 1st from 5 – 7 p.m. come to the opening reception in Old Town Hall and enjoy free refreshments and a juried art exhibit of 20 local artists. Live music and dance performances start 5 p.m. Solo guitarist Brian Rolland starts off the evening with a blend of Jazz and Latin music. At 6 p.m. solo acoustic singer-songwriter, Brad Byrd, takes the stage followed at 7 p.m. by international performers The Paul Madore Chorale. At 8 and 8:30 p.m. music turns to movement with performances from Jamie “La Damasquina” Belsito, flamenco dancer and Cecilia Raassina of Codify, modern dance.

At the opening reception remarks will be made by the Salem Culural Council and the city will announce the ArtBox winners. June 1st through June 3rd, the 4th annual Salem Arts Festival will be in full swing. Come to this entirely FREE event hosted by Salem Main Streets. The opening reception is Friday evening. Located in Old Town Hall from 5 – 7 p.m. you can enjoy a juried art exhibit and live music and dance. On Saturday check out the juried street fair located on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall near Old Town Hall and Collaborative Abstract Expressionism located next to Gulu Gulu in Lappin Park. Old Town Hall will continue to host the art exhibit and even more live comedy, music and performances. And if that isn’t enough, there will be live music, hoopdance and bellydance performances all afternoon on the East India Fountain Stage. Then on Sunday catch even more performances on the East India Fountain Stage from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and join a human chess game in Derby Square at noon. Wrap up the weekend at the Gulu Gulu Café starting at 5 p.m. with music, poetry, film and a Wrap Party. There will be 17 beautiful ice sculptures gracing the downtown for the 10th Annual  Salem’s So Sweet festival February 10 – 14, 2012. The festival begins with a Wine and Chocolate Tasting in Hamilton Hall on Friday, February 10. Tickets are almost sold out for this decadent event and can be purchased by calling (978)744-0004. On Saturday, February 11 by noon 17 large ice sculptures will fill downtown Salem. Many shops will be offering free chocolate samples and fantastic shopping discounts. It’s a great opportunity to do your Valentine shopping and make dinner reservations at one of 60 eating establishments downtown Salem.
