Haunted Happenings officially kicks off with the Salem Chamber of Commerce Grand Parade Thursday, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. The parade will start at Shetland Park at 6:30 p.m. this year honoring Former Police Chief St. Pierre as a “Local Hero.” It promises to be full of fantastic costumes, bands and floats. This year’s theme is “A Night at the Museum.” If you can’t make it downtown turn on SATV to watch local live coverage of the parade. Salem Main Streets will be a co-host for the parade coverage. Friday is Mayor’s Night Out in Salem with free admission for Salem residents to several area museums and trick or treating at select downtown businesses. Participating museums range from the Salem Witch Museum to the House of the Seven Gables. Trick or Treating with the Mayor begins at 5:30 p.m. at the East India Fountain on Essex Street. Celebrate the 200th Birthday of Sophia Peabody Hawthorne downtown Salem, MA from Saturday, September 19 through Monday September 21th. Salem Main Streets is looking for volunteers to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of Salem with visitors at our Information Booth. Volunteers will staff the booth at the start of the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall where it meets Washington Street to hand out maps and give out information about Salem’s wide variety of attractions, events and businesses. Last October SMS information volunteers assisted over 14,000 visitors during weekends in the booth. For a listing of events in Salem in October visit www.hauntedhappenings.org.

All volunteers will be trained and receive an official shirt. The training will take place Saturday, September 26 from 9:30 a.m. The training session will be held at the National Park Service Regional Visitor Center at the corner of Essex Street and New Liberty Street. Volunteers are needed for two hour shifts on October 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 24, 25, 30, and 31.

Help visitors by showing them your enthusiasm for our cultured and historic city. Make it a fun and easy for visitors to explore all of Salem’s sites and attractions. The Salem Farmers’ Market will be holding a 375th Anniversary celebration at the market on Thursday, September 3 starting at 4:00 p.m. Speakers at the event include Representative John Keenan and local historian Jim McCallister. On September 3, 1634 the Massachusetts General Court first authorized Salem to hold a weekly farmers market. The event September 3rd will honor Salem’s long tradition as a market town and celebrate the successful return of a market to downtown Salem. The Salem Farmers’ Market, organized by Salem Main Streets, is held in Derby Square on Front St. every Thursday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. For more information or updates visit www.salemfarmersmarket.org.
