Introducing Kylie Sullivan, Main Streets Manager

We are pleased to introduce Kylie Sullivan as the new Salem Main Streets Manager! Kylie started last week and has already started making the rounds to meet with downtown business owners, residents, volunteers, and town officials.

“It’s great to see the full time position at Salem Main Streets filled by Kylie,” said Jason Consalvo, branch manager for Salem Five. “With her background at the Mass Cultural Council we think she can bring along a wealth of information on how to improve and enhance the outdoor spaces in Salem. Salem Five is looking forward to working with Kylie.”

Kylie Sullivan comes to Salem Main Streets after six years as a grants administrator at the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the state’s arts agency. She has worked with a range of nonprofits, community organizations, and educational institutions, with a particular focus on volunteer management, program coordination, and cultural economic development. She received an M.B.A. from Simmons School of Management and a B.A. in music from Wesleyan University. A native of Georgetown, MA, Kylie and her husband have lived in Salem for four years.

John Boris, owner of John A. Boris & Associates who met with Kylie at a networking event, stated, “As a steering committee member I have to admit I love working with Main Streets and all of the downtown businesses, and I believe we have found the right candidate to replace Jennifer Bell, our former manager. I am looking forward to introducing Kylie to the downtown business community, and I am sure she will be well-received.”

Kylie is excited to get started and will be actively soliciting community feedback regarding suggestions for the role and direction of Salem Main Streets moving forward. Salem MainStreets, like many other community organizations watched the events of last week unfold in horror. Out of respect for the fallen and injured, we back-pedaled on self-promotion. A tweet here and there, some calendar entries, but for the most part we were glued to the TV and read social media to be in touch. Just like all of you.

“Freedom Is Not Free” (engraved on the Washington, D.C. Korean War Veterans Memorial). It must be tended to, watched and guarded. Boston, with the emotional support of Salem, NYC, Chicago and the rest of America did just that this past week.

Because of that we can return to our lives, and enjoy the benefits of living in communities like Salem and Boston.

Mark your calendar for a series of Welcome Back Salem Events Starting November 1…

Welcome Back Residents begins with the opening of the Salem Winter Farmers’ Market in Old Town Hall on November 1. The market will be open from 3 – 6 p.m. and offer over 20 vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and specialty food items. For more information visit www.salemfarmersmarket.org.

Salem First Friday November 2 – begins with glass blowing, book signings, music and much more. Salem First Friday is a year round program with businesses staying open until at least 8 p.m. in the downtown (including Pickering Wharf) and offer special events, discounts and promotions.

On Friday, November 2 the Salem YMCA will be offering babysitting services for children 5 – 12 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Adults can enjoy First Friday events while their children will enjoy well supervised gym activities including gymnastics, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, and dancing! Pizza and drinks are included. Mention Salem First Friday and you save $5.00 off the $15.00 fee. Space is limited so call ahead (978-740-9622) to save a spot.

Some of the free special events scheduled for November 2 include: Boston Bead Company holding a Pearl and Gem Trunk Show with a chance to win a $50 Door Prize, Seed Stitch has fabulous fashion inspired hats from Fiber Fashion Show, the Witch DR is holding an art show with Benjamin Stebbings glass blowing and refreshments, R & J Coin is holding a book signing with Timothy Kendall, author of The Salem Witch Trials Calendar, re-find women has a guest appearance by Rosalyn Englehardt from Beautiful Me with goodie bags and refreshments and Front Street Coffeehouse will host DJ Radio Scotvoid. Contact participating businesses to learn more about the details of the events and promotions which are subject to changes.

Take a seasonal photo at the Salem Farmers’ Market Thursday, October 18. There will be a lovely autumn display by the steps of Old Town Hall (hay bales, pumpkins and corn stalks). Stop by during market hours from 3 – 7 p.m. in Derby Square and take a picture of yourself at the Salem Farmers’ Market before it moves into Old Town Hall in two weeks. Enjoy a cooking demonstration at 3:30 and music by the Dejas from 5 – 7 p.m. Fresh fruits and vegetables are available at the market as well as many other specialty food items. Salem Main Streets is excited to announce a new initiative called “Salem First Friday” where many downtown Salem businesses will stay open until at least 8 p.m. on the First Friday of every month. Businesses will host special events and entertainment, offer discounts and promotions.

During the first First Friday, October 5, locals can enjoy Trick-or-Treating with Mayor Kimberley Driscoll starting on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall at the entrance of the Museum Place mall at 5:30 p.m. Hundreds of children are expected to dress up and trick-or-treat with the Mayor.

Many Salem attractions will be open Free to Salem Residents starting at 3 p.m. As always, the Salem Witch Museum and Peabody Essex Museum are free to Salem Residents but during this night additional attractions will be open free to residents.

There will be many downtown businesses offering special events, promotions and entertainment. Events Friday, October 5 include a wine tasting, movie night, musical entertainment and more. Here are a sample of some of the participating businesses: Boston Bead Company, Seed Stitch, Avalanche Company Store, Maria’s Sweet Somethings, Pamplemousse, Mud Puddle Toys, Treasures Over Time, Rouge Cosmetics, Glass and Etc., and Two Girls Shop. To participate, businesses must commit to staying open late for the first Friday until at least 8 p.m. and have entertainment or activities in their store to draw shoppers and create a monthly Salem downtown “event” night.
