It’s time to revisit the decade of teased hair, leg warmers, and neon leggings at the biggest dance party fundraising event of the year, the 8O’s Dance Party! This like totally hip event is on Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Salem Waterfront Hotel.  There is a contest for the best 8O’s outfit, as well as raffles, and a cash bar. There will be free appetizers and 8O’s music which will be provided by the popular Sound City Entertainment. Dance the night away to popular hits of the 80’s while supporting the efforts of Salem Main Streets and downtown revitalization.

Salem residents ages 60 and over can visit the Witch House free of charge.~ Proof of age and residency is required.

Farmers’ Market – 3PM-7PM – Derby Square

Come visit us at Historic Derby Square on Front Street in Downtown Salem the market  is held every Thursday evening from 3:00PM – 7:00PM through December 21, 2012.

Window Box & Traffic Island Awards Ceremony – 5:30PM – Brookhouse Garden – 180 Derby Street – Please join Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, the Salem Garden Club and the Salem Beautification Committee as they award the winners of the City’s window box competition and traffic island sponsorship program. Light refreshments will be served immediately following the ceremony.

Movie on the Common –~After Dark (8:30PM)~– Salem Common

Bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy Madagascar 2.. ~The Salem Common Neighborhood Association will be selling snacks.

Saturday, August 11 & Sunday, August 12

Essex Street Fair – 10AM-6PM – Essex St. Pedestrian Mall

Fun for all ages this street festival has something for everyone. Crafts, jewelry, paintings, stained glass, and other unique items will be featured along the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall.Buskers, face painters, and strolling musicians will entertain crowds.  For more information, contact the Salem Chamber of Commerce at 978-744-0004.

Tonight on the Salem Common don’t miss Salem’s Ice Scream Bowl from 6 – 7:30 p.m.  (Tuesday August 7th )

This year you will be able to taste ice cream from Cherry Farm Creamery, Hobbs Ice Cream, Treadwell’s Ice Cream, Maria’s Sweet Somethings, Down River Ice Cream, Ben & Jerry’s, Rita’s Italian Ice. Mix 104.1 Ice Cream Truck (Turkey Hill Ice Cream) and Treadwell’s!

There will also be free facepainting for kids and music by DJ Doug. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. on the Salem Common and end at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children, spoons and napkins will be supplied. Proceeds benefit Salem Main Streets.

 A Celebration of Salem’s Heritage in “Ships, Sawdust, Sailors & Song” August 3-4, 2012

The 24th annual Maritime Festival will host an exciting array of free family fun festivities, including live music, free harbor cruises, traditional craft demonstrations, story-telling, dancing, theatre and much more!  The Festival is organized and hosted by Salem Maritime National Historic Site. While at the festival stop by the Salem Farmers’ Market booth for some delicious fresh local fruits and vegetables.

Tonight enjoy a free Sunset Concert at Historic Derby Wharf from 6:30 – 9 featuring the highly acclaimed jazz, funk and blues ensemble – The Boston Horns!
