Salem, Shopping and Scavenger Hunt

We have an exciting Salem First Friday on tap this Friday night March 1st! Over 30 stores are staying open later than usual just for you! Do you believe in magic— well of course you do if you live in Salem— close your eyes, tap your heels and join us for a magical night!

Downtown and Pickering Wharf businesses host special events including cooking demonstrations, live music, art showings and all manner of creative events! And (did you note our reference to tapping heels?) we have a special added attraction of an “Oz the Great and Powerful” scavenger hunt with prizes, special extended movie preview at Cinema Salem, live Spanish Flamenco dance and guitar demonstration in Museum Place Mall, face painting at Cinema Salem as well as sales and promotions in many of the stores and restaurants. Most events begin at 5pm.

Check into at least 8 of the 30-plus participating businesses on the Salem First Friday listing and bring your completed card (available online or in the stores) to Cinema Salem between 6:30-8:30pm that night to enter a special drawing for an “Oz in Salem” prize package. Additional prizes will be drawn including special 3D pre-screening tickets and swag!

Haunted Happenings is only just beginning for Salem! There are many more spooks and scares to experience before the season ends. Just this weekend alone there is the 15th Annual Child’s Day festival, a war memorial, an 80’s zombie prom and the ghostly Haunted Harbor Cruise as well as many other events.

The Children’s Day Festival – Saturday, Salem celebrates its 15th annual Children’s Day with live performers, costume contests, games, yummy food, pony rides and many more! Come to the Salem Commons from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to take part in the festival activities.

80’s Zombie Prom – The 80’s and zombie have one thing in common – there are eternal and full of fashion faux pas. So dusty off your jelly bean skirt and that keyboard tie, and mix it with a little rotting flesh. And of course there will be an undead prom King and Queen. Saturday night at Rockafellas from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. with musical guests Bail Out Boston and DJ Tony SAP.

And on a more somber note, this Saturday and Sunday the Salem Waterfront Hotel will be hosting the Moving Memorial for Massachusetts Service Members who have made the ultimate sacrifice since 2001. All are welcomed to visit the kiosk and honor their memory.

Downtown Salem is full of activity now that Haunted Happenings has begun. This weekend is the Annual Salem Chamber of Commerce Biz Baz. The street fair is on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall and continues down Essex Street to Hawthorne Blvd. and downt Hawthorne Blvd. Throughout the weekend there are many fun events and activities, great shopping and dining. Salem First Friday Starts October 5

Salem Main Streets is excited to announce a new initiative called “Salem First Friday” where many downtown Salem businesses will stay open until at least 8 p.m. on the First Friday of every month. Businesses will host special events and entertainment, offer discounts and promotions.

During the first First Friday, October 5, locals can enjoy Trick-or-Treating with Mayor Kimberley Driscoll starting on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall at the entrance of the Museum Place mall at 5:30 p.m. Hundreds of children are expected to dress up and trick-or-treat with the Mayor.

Many Salem attractions will be open Free to Salem Residents starting at 3 p.m. As always, the Salem Witch Museum and Peabody Essex Museum are free to Salem Residents but during this night additional attractions will be open free to residents.

There will be many downtown businesses offering special events, promotions and entertainment. Events Friday, October 5 include a wine tasting, movie night, musical entertainment and more. Here are a sample of some of the participating businesses: Boston Bead Company, Seed Stitch, Avalanche Company Store, Maria’s Sweet Somethings, Pamplemousse, Mud Puddle Toys, Treasures Over Time, Rouge Cosmetics, Glass and Etc., and Two Girls Shop. To participate, businesses must commit to staying open late for the first Friday until at least 8 p.m. and have entertainment or activities in their store to draw shoppers and create a monthly Salem downtown “event” night.
