Retro Dance Party At PEM

“Celebrities and TV icons” will flood the streets of Salem on April17th as the Peabody Essex Museum presents “Tune In“, its next episode of the highly popular monthly PEM/PM open late party series. The theme is a tribute to pop culture, especially 1960s TV sitcoms.

Of course the attendees will really be the general public in costume, representing their favorite over-the-top TV icons. Considering the creative minds on the North Shore, we can expect to see Lucy, Samantha, and Jeannie. Because this is Salem, no doubt a few vampires and werewolves will join in as well (remember the Addams Family and The Munsters?).

This dance party is being presented in collaboration with Go Out Loud, Salem’s LGBT & modern equality organization; entertainment for this high-energy dance party will be by DJ Gay Jim Clerkin (KISS 108, Matty in the Morning).

Other activities of the evening include a chance to show off your ‘60s sitcom knowledge in a trivia contest, a drag performance by Joslyn Fox of RuPaul’s Drag Race, an appearance from The Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and a photo booth with fashion photographer Corey Banda.

You can also enjoy cocktails and small plates from the Hawthorne Hotel, try your hand at making far-out paper dolls and tour PEM’s newest exhibition, California Design, 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way.

This evening of music, dancing, cocktails, costuming, art making and games will take place from 6-9pm. Entry is free to members and Salem residents; admission to nonmembers is $10 at the door.

Hot on the heels of our first Business Spotlight, Salem Main Streets is pleased to introduce another new monthly feature – Citizen of the Month! The intent of this feature will be to spotlight individuals who are going above and beyond to make Salem a great community in which to live, work, and play. Hopefully, you’ll learn new ways that you can help as well.

This month we will spotlight not one, but TWO, citizens on the month – Stephanie Hagyard and Christian Haselgrove, co-founders of Salem Volunteers.

Stephanie, a 9-year-resident of Salem working at a local mortgage company, and Christian, a 7-year-resident working in IT and medical research, actually met while volunteering. The two had both signed up to volunteer at Salem Oktoberfest. Christian was the only one to show up in lederhosen. Clearly, this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Skip ahead to 2013 – the two friends were volunteering together at the Salem Film Fest. They started chatting about the lack of a central place for potential volunteers to learn about opportunities around town; Christian had only found out about volunteering at the Film Fest because Stephanie happened to mention it. With that, Salem Volunteers was born.

Salem Volunteers strives to be a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities around town. While they do not physically match volunteers with organizations, Stephanie and Christian manage a website, a weekly newsletter, and an active Facebook profile to promote the many organizations and events in Salem looking for volunteer help. All of this is accomplished on their own time and expense.

Both Stephanie and Christian are extremely active volunteers, explaining that volunteering is a great way to give back, share your passions, and connect with the community. They’re two of Salem Main Streets’ most reliable volunteers – in the past year alone, one or both have volunteered to help at the Salem Arts Festival, the Salem Farmers Market, the Haunted Happenings info booth, and New Years Eve.

Dining is always a special event in Salem Ma. We have so many fine and diverse eating establishments that you can easily eat out every night for a week and not consume the same foods. To prove that and to entice more fans, the Chamber of Commerce once again serves up Salem Restaurant Week.

Actually it is two weeks: Sunday-Thursday this week, and repeated next week March 23-27. A two-course prix-fixe dinner menu for $18, or a three-course prix-fixe dinner menu for $28, or both will be on the special menus from participating restaurants. (this does not include drinks, taxes or gratuities).

Salem Film Fest – Come to Salem, See the World

Global spotlights focusing on Salem, MA, are not unusual during October with Haunted Happenings festivities ensue. But we’re now getting used to world-wide attention and engagement in March for the Salem Film Fest.

From March 6 – 13, the largest all-documentary festival in New England will be presented at multiple venues in Salem by an all-volunteer organization of passionate film-lovers who have worked long hours to really make it a festival of film and more.

According to the website, “Besides presenting great documentary films, Salem Film Fest offers a rick schedule of discussions, parties, meet-and-greets, family-friendly screenings, student film showcases, and opportunities to meet visiting filmmakers in intimate settings.”

To just list the films would not do justice to the quality and variety selected, therefore we suggest you go to their website for the full effect.

To highlight the importance of this event, look no further than the fact that two-thirds of the featured filmmakers from all over the world are expected to attend and engage in post-screening dialogue.

Businesses around town are starting to decorate their windows in anticipation of this special festival, and “SFF super-fans” already have their viewing strategies planned for the full festival. This is a truly unique Salem event that you can’t miss!

Sweet deal coming up in Salem Ma! We don’t have to sugar coat this event. The next project that Salem Main Streets presents to the community is the Annual Salem So Sweet Chocolate & Ice Sculpture Festival.

This decadent tradition of delectable chocolate, sparkling ice sculptures, chocolate sampling and Valentine’s Day shopping draws crowds from near and far.

So much so that we want to invite local businesses to take advantage of opportunities to participate in the Salem So Sweet Chocolate & Ice Sculpture Festival; offer a promotion, sponsor an ice sculpture, or showcase food/wine at the kick-off event.

It may be cold outside but chocolate warms the heart and invites customers into stores as we head into the month of February.
