Silver Moon Comics & Collectibles is a new comic book theme store having its grand opening in the Museum Place Mall, today & tomorrow. In addition to comics, there will also be figurines, posters, and tie-ins with movies and TV shows related to the industry— as well as guest artists on a regular basis. The store provides discounts to customers with military or Salem State University ID and is receptive to anyone wishing to bring in comics or collectibles to trade or sell. The Salem YMCA is hosting its first annual Salem’s Best Chef fundraising event, featuring chefs from Finz, 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar, the Ugly Mug Diner, and Scratch Kitchen. Takes place tonight 6-8 pm in the YMCA’s Ames Hall. The extra interesting aspect of this fundraiser for the Y is that for the competition portion of the event, each chef will be given a basket of secret ingredients, “Chopped” style from— the Salem Farmers’ Market! Peabody Essex Museum continues to intrigue, amaze and entertain with its selection of exhibits. Today it launches an all day session of events; it is the exclusive East Coast venue for Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic. This exhibition brings together 40 sculptures by Alexander Calder, one of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th century. It will run from Sept. 6 to Jan. 4, 2015.

Mystery Dinner Theatre Focuses on The Friendship

Who would think, looking at the replica of The Friendship at dock on Derby Wharf that it could be related to a murder mystery?

Dinner theatre with a twist is on tap for guests at this Tuesday’s special 7pm production of Murder Mystery at Opus Restaurant, presented by the Salem Theatre Company, in conjunction with Creative Salem.

It’s 1830. Joseph Peabody’s ship The Friendship has been attacked in the East Indies. Only four survivors return. You are on board the boat with the reprisal mission, comprised of Pirates, Rapscallions and Rascals.

The play asks “Who can you trust? Who can you not trust? What really is behind that eyepatch….?”

If you’ve never attended a mystery dinner theater the key is audience participation. Usually there is no stage; the actors move all around so you can see and hear from all seats.

In this particular production “What people are trying to solve is a murder of the brutal (and fictional) ‘Captain Jan Overy’ of The Friendship,” states Matthew Gray, director.

There was an actual incident involving a ship called The Friendship being attacked in 1831.

“Our scenario may be historically based, but is only hysterically realized. While some local references have been made, this is not a historically referential event,” explains Gray.

And in addition to the entertainment, and the food (it is dinner theatre), there is also a prize to the person solving the mystery.

Gray adds, “There is indeed a prize for the winner… A MYSTERY prize!”

This evening of thrills, chills, laughs and mystery is part of the continuing effort by Creative Salem to showcase more than just local bands. The goal is to optimize the nightlife space with diversity, drive and creativity.

Salem has that certain something that we feel makes us a tad bit different than other “theme” destinations. Here you don’t just look, you can also reach out and touch. We are interactive.

Salem Mayor Wants to Talk & Walk with You!

Recent star of print, broadcast, and the internet, Salem’s own Mayor Kimberley Driscoll will be walking & talking with those of you interested in joining her for an exciting night on the town during our Heritage Days Festival (Aug.1-10)!

That’s right! Salem’s annual Mayor’s Night Out Restaurant Sampler evening is back: Monday, Aug. 4 from 5 pm – 7 pm.

Join Mayor Driscoll on a tour of three of Salem’s hot dining spots, kicking off at Brodie’s Seaport, continuing along to Victoria’s Station, and finishing with a beautiful view of Salem Harbor at Capt’s Waterfront Bar & Grill. The Mayor’s Night Out event, focusing this year on Pickering Wharf, gives residents a unique opportunity to spend time with the Mayor, ask a few questions, chat, hear stories and most tantalizingly a chance to explore and enjoy tasty hors d’oeuvres from a few of Salem’s popular restaurants.

The Mayor’s Night Out Restaurant Sampler costs $20 to participate— that’s $20 for hors d’oeuvres at three locations— with proceeds to benefit Salem Main Streets. We are a non-profit organization with the goal of revitalizing downtown Salem as a vibrant year-round retail, dining and cultural destination. We organize the Salem Farmers’ Market, Salem Arts Festival, and other events in downtown Salem.

Different from most Heritage Days activities which usually (for example) run the length of the Salem Common and attract hundreds of observers, this is a more intimate, interactive gathering wherein participants actually move the event along.

Dining is always a special event in Salem Ma. We have so many fine and diverse eating establishments that you can easily eat out every night for a week and not consume the same foods. To prove that and to entice more fans, the Chamber of Commerce once again serves up Salem Restaurant Week.

Actually it is two weeks: Sunday-Thursday this week, and repeated next week March 23-27. A two-course prix-fixe dinner menu for $18, or a three-course prix-fixe dinner menu for $28, or both will be on the special menus from participating restaurants. (this does not include drinks, taxes or gratuities).

Happy Holidays from Salem Main Streets Director, Jennifer Bell

Thank you to the many volunteers and members of the Salem Community who have been so supportive of the Salem Main Streets program and my efforts for the last five plus years. Together we took a dormant Main Streets program and seasonal town and developed thriving programs which are enjoyed by thousands; the Salem Farmers’ Market, Salem Arts Festival,Visitor Ambassador Program in October, Salem First Fridays and more. Salem has become the Dining Destination on the North Shore and over 80 new businesses have opened in the downtown in those five years. Main Streets took over the management of the Salem’s So Sweet Chocolate and Ice Sculpture Festival, Salem’s Ice Scream Bowl, Mayor’s Night Out, Holiday Happenings and we supported the efforts of new events such as the Salem Film Festival, Salem Literary Festival, Mass Poetry Festival, and Living Green and Renewable Energy Fair which have grown into popular events. We started the reusable tote bag program “In Salem, Green is the New Black” and helped make Salem a greener city with the support of the Downtown Business community.

These programs were only possible through thousands of hours of volunteer time each year donated to Salem Main Streets by hundreds of volunteers and support by the City of Salem, and community partners like the Salem Chamber of Commerce. Salem should be proud of the spirit of volunteerism and can do attitude that prevails. No project is too big, too new to begin. Salem is a unique place which celebrates its history while embracing the present and looking towards the future.

My family and I have enjoyed living in Salem and being able to contribute to the Salem Community.
