While Salem is scary in October and sentimental in December, it is So Sweet in February. This is our way of reminding you that tickets are now on sale— and will, as tradition has it, sell out quickly— for the annual Salem’s So Sweet Chocolate and Ice Sculpture Festival.

The festival is organized in partnership between Salem Main Streets, the Salem Chamber of Commerce, and Destination Salem.  This year’s dates are Feb. 6-15 and will include ice sculptures around town, in-store promotions by retailers and restaurants in our downtown district, a Golden Ticket Raffle, and more. But of course the highlight is the kick off event, Friday Feb. 6th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Colonial Hall at Rockafellas. It features a luscious tasting event: wine and chocolate samplings from premier Salem restaurants, stores, and sweet shops.

We are talking about everything from chocolate mousse to donuts to chocolate spaghetti, with truffles of all sizes, plus a variety of wines and other alcoholic treats that go with just about every type of chocolate.

“On the one hand, it amazes me how passionate people are about this event – people have been asking about tickets since November!” says Kylie Sullivan, manager of Salem Main Streets.  “But on the other hand, it’s not hard to see why.  We truly have an incredible food and restaurant scene here in Salem, and it shines through at an event like this.”

Do something special for your your special Valentine this year!  Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased over the phone at 978-744-0004, online here, or in person at the Salem Chamber of Commerce, 265 Essex Street, Suite 101.

If you tried visiting the House of Seven Gables at any time over the past couple of days you discovered that you could not get in. But no need to worry. Nothing is wrong.

In fact, according to Kara McLaughlin’s Executive Director comments in the Gables newsletter, everything is fine.

“We saw 25,000 guests in October alone. On September 21st, more than 250 people attended our annual fund-raising event, Taste of the Gables. On November 15th, more than 120 Salem residents took part in our Salem Residents Appreciation Day party as we launched a program to offer free museum admission for Salem residents. Salem residents can now enjoy our historic house museums and waterfront gardens on a complimentary basis year-round, with the exception of October.”

So why close down?House of Seven Gables

In their own words….

Dear Friends,

The House of the Seven Gables Annual Shutdown will take place from January 1 – January 15, 2015.

From January 1 – January 15, 2015, The House of the Seven Gables will be closed for our annual shutdown. During the shutdown we will be working on maintenance projects and housekeeping, to ensure that we are ready to welcome in the new year. We will continue to be active on social media, and update our website as events and programs become scheduled.

2015 is sure to be an exciting year here at The House of the Seven Gables, as we have a lot planned for the months ahead. Be sure to check facebook.com/7gables, and our website www.7gables.org for updates.

We will reopen on January 16, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Check our website for the most current hours and schedule.

Be sure to have a happy and safe New Year, and we will see you in 2015!

Sincerely,

The Staff of The House of the Seven Gables

Over the past few months they have also completed some highly visible projects, including the installation of a new, wooden shingle roof on the Hooper-Hathaway House and the construction of a new, architecturally appropriate porch on The Settlement House.

The House of Seven Gables is located at 115 Derby Street, Salem MA.

“To get off to a good start” and “to enter energetically” are two definitions provided at the Merriam-Webster.com website  for the word launch. No wonder we picked it to describe our annual New Year’s Eve celebration here in Salem Ma, this year set for Wednesday, Dec. 31st from 4-7pm.

LAUNCH!  is a family-friendly, high-energy, music-filled, kick-off for the new year. We want you to be a part of LAUNCH!  Everyone is welcome. Salem resident or not. No need to drive to and then back from Boston. Come on down to Old Town Hall and Derby Square.

And yes, 4-7pm. Our balloon drops promptly at 7pm. We will have the Big Countdown a full 5 hours before everyone else — unless you are celebrating with friends, family or co-workers in Accra (Ghana), Casablanca (Morocco), Dublin (Ireland), Lisbon (Portugal), London (England) and Reykjavik (Iceland) among other global locales where it will be midnight.

“We organized LAUNCH! for the first time last year, and it was immediately clear that this needed to be an annual tradition where the community could truly come together,” states Kylie Sullivan, Salem Main Streets Manager. “Plus there’s still plenty of time after our early countdown to catch one of the many other great events happening all over town on New Year’s Eve!”

There will be New Year’s Eve related activities, crafts for kids of all ages, music by the Dejas, the OnPoint Ensemble, the Boondock Sinners, and more. This event is free of charge thanks to the support of our partners, the City of Salem, Creative Salem, the Dejas, the Gathering, LEAP for Education, and Salem YMCA.

LAUNCH! will be a great way to ring in the New Year with your entire family at a reasonable hour, and then still be able to go to other parties later (with grandma or aunt Jane watching the kids).

Plus, it’s early enough that you can make a lot of noise and the neighbors won’t mind.

Free Salem parkingLet’s face, as much as you plan your gift lists, and check them twice, yes even thrice, comes Dec. 24th and you find someone just not getting the right gift message from you. Or one of the kids just doesn’t have enough stuff in his/her stocking.

What to do? Come to Salem Ma. We are open on the 24th and to make it easier for you, Mayor Kimberly Driscoll has announced that parking in all city-owned locations in Salem will be free on Wednesday, December 24. That not only is free parking but convenient as in not a football field away parking.

Whether you seek a romantic gift, a rare oddity, something fun & whimsical, or appropriate and suitable, our Downtown merchants have you covered.

So, to the procrastinators, the “oh-oh I forgot aunt Edna’s” and the seekers of the “perfect” gift to convey a special message, we say bring it on. And bring your car. We’ve got a nice free spot for it on Dec. 24th.

It’s hard to believe, but the final Salem Winter Market of the season is already here – Thursday, Dec. 18 from 3 pm to 7 pm on Artists’ Row.  It’s your last chance to stock up on your favorite vendors until June, or take care of the rest of your holiday gift shopping.  Here’s our recommendations for the “can’t miss” items at the final market.

Freezer Fodder

Haul out the Holly

  • Long Hill Orchard – grab a wreath or garland for the front door or brighten up the porch.
  • Wolf Meadow Farm – the holidays mean parties and guests, and that means you need hors d’oeuvres.  Get a few good cheeses and your prep work just got easier.
  • SalemSpice – make that special roast/side/dessert even more special with salts and spices for any dish.
  • Witch City Wicks – move over, Yankee Candle.  From Clean Cotton to Blue Spruce to…Opium, Witch City Wicks’ scented candles will get your house smelling just the way you’d like before your houseguests come to stay.

Stocking Stuffers (and much more)

  • Salem Soapworks – a local favorite, Kathleen’s beautiful soaps, lotions, and gift sets smell even better than they look.
  • All Fruit, Inc. – Anne’s amazing combos of dried fruits and nuts are straight up addictive, and the range of options will allow you to please any palate on your list.
  • Shine Jewelry – amazing beads and baubles for the jewelry lover in your life.
  • Green Phoenix Threads – these one-of-a-kind jackets, scarves, and gloves will have everyone asking where they came from, and how they can get their own.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to swing by Jodi Bee Bakes for a special dessert or a little hot chocolate.  See you at the Market!
